Fancy Markets — Back & Lay Explained

What are Fancy Markets?

Fancy markets (also called session or special markets) are bets on specific events within a match — not on the final result. They let you bet on things like:

  • How many runs a team will score in an over
  • How many runs a batsman will make
  • Total match runs, wickets, boundaries, sixes, etc.
  • Player performance (runs, wickets, catches)

How Fancy Odds Work

Fancy markets show odds differently from match markets. Instead of decimal odds like 1.80, fancy markets show a run line with Yes (Back) and No (Lay) rates.

Example: Team Runs in 6 Overs

Market: "India 6 Over Runs" — Line: 45

Rate (Odds)Meaning
Yes (Back)90You think India will score 45 or MORE runs in 6 overs
No (Lay)110You think India will score LESS than 45 runs in 6 overs

The rate shown (90, 110) means paise per rupee — or simply a percentage. A rate of 90 means you win 90% of your stake.

Fancy Back (Yes) — Betting Over the Line

When you Back (Yes) on a fancy market, you are saying the actual number will be equal to or above the line.

Example: Fancy Back

Market: "India 6 Over Runs" — Line: 45, Rate: 90

You bet Yes (Back) with stake 1,000

  • If India scores 45 or more: You win +900 (1,000 x 90/100)
  • If India scores less than 45: You lose -1,000 (your stake)

Profit = Stake x (Rate / 100) = 1,000 x 0.90 = 900

Fancy Lay (No) — Betting Under the Line

When you Lay (No) on a fancy market, you are saying the actual number will be below the line. You are taking the other side — acting as the bookmaker for someone else's "Yes" bet.

Example: Fancy Lay

Market: "India 6 Over Runs" — Line: 45, Rate: 110

You bet No (Lay) with stake 1,000

  • If India scores less than 45 (your prediction is correct): You win +1,000 (the backer's stake)
  • If India scores 45 or more (your prediction is wrong): You pay -1,100 liability

Liability = Stake x (Rate / 100) = 1,000 x 1.10 = 1,100

Can You Hedge Fancy Markets?

Yes! The same hedging concept works. If you Back Yes at rate 90 and then the line moves, you can Lay No at a different rate to lock in profit — just like match market hedging.

Key takeaway: Fancy markets let you bet on numbers within a match. Yes = above the line, No = below the line. The rate works as a percentage — rate of 90 means you win 90% of your stake if correct.
